The Teams Priorities as set by the ward panel are

1. Burglary
2. Speeding/Road safety
3. Anti social behaviour

Updates on Ward Priority

Burglary:
We have been working on the Burglary priority running such events as property marking days and door to door enquiries we are currently carrying out Home security surveys across the ward. Checking such things as:

Insecure, open or vulnerable windows.
Insecure or open front doors
Mail or news left in letterbox.
Ladders left insecure.
Insecure or open side or back doors.

Speeding/Road safety

We continue to carry out community speed watch operation monthly with great results the idea behind this is to educate rather than targeting motorists we believe by stopping the speeding motorists and giving them a warning letter the message it’s getting through.
On our patrols Police warning notifications are given to vehicles not displaying road tax which results in a possible fine of up to £1000 information is passed to the DVLA of such vehicles.
St Helier is running an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) operation in the coming months this will send a clear message to any motorist that is driving a vehicle with no insurance. The outcome for anyone caught will be £200 fine and 6 points on their licence and also the seizure of their vehicle

Anti social behaviour
We have been informed that youths are congregating by the shops waiting for over 18’s to purchase alcohol and also cigarettes. May we remind residents that it is an offence to purchase items on their behalf which will be dealt with by a Penalty Notice for Disorder an £80 fine. Officers will be working in plan cloths and in uniform to combat this issue.

Regularly the team runs a test purchasing operation going to all of our licensed premises using the police cadets. We use the cadets to test the shops to see if that they are selling to underage. For the places that fail the person selling is given a £80 fine and also the licensee is advised and warned that they could lose their licence. We believe this is a great way in combating ASB because youth will generally congregate were they believe that it is an easy place to purchase under age.

The message below is from officers setting up Joint ward initiative for dog walkers of the Morden parks.

Dog Watch:

Our aims of dog watch?

Firstly we wanted to try and get as many people involved in the scheme as possible so that they have access to our ward details with the effect that if they do see crime and disorder they can either contact us directly or if it’s an emergency dial 999.
Secondly we felt it was a great way for dog walkers to report things like vandalism, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, ASB, underage drinking, problem dogs and to promote sensible dog ownership!
As you know your self, even things like litter and graffiti can cause a negative impact on the area and this always attracts more of the same problems until it becomes a place where the general public don’t feel safe to walk or spend time with there families.

Meetings

I have already put together a few people who would be will to attend the meetings. For the benefit of the members, we have a dog nutrient expert, a professional dog trainer, and members of the MPS dog section, who are willing to talk at the meeting.
For our benefit, I will attend the meetings, along with members of surrounding teams to report policing issues within the parks. And feedback as to whether these issues are getting better or worse?? And also what we can do to stop these issues and how we can make people in the parks feel safer.

DRIVE OUT VEHICLE CRIME – GRAVENEY WARD

Dear residents,

In the second of seven planned vehicle crime reduction interventions under the ‘Drive out Vehicle Crime’ campaign, Police across Merton are handing out free security screws to motorists for securing number plates.

Merton Police and Safer Merton are advising motorists to secure their number plates using security fixings to prevent them from being stolen. Once fitted, they cannot be removed using a normal screwdriver.

There has been a significant increase in the theft of vehicle number plates across the borough in the last few years with 11% of all recorded thefts in Merton being theft of number plates.

Acting Sergeant Dan WHEATLEY from the Raynes Park Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "Merton Police is committed to keeping crime low by reducing vehicle crime. The theft of a vehicle number plate may appear to be a minor crime but it is an inconvenience and causes a financial cost to the car owner. In some cases stolen plates are then used to facilitate further offences. The use of security fixings can prevent your number plate from being stolen. Merton Police are also investigating all such reports and speaking to all victims of this type of crime to ascertain the circumstances behind the theft. If reports are found to be false to avoid parking fines and congestion charging then robust action will be taken against those making that report.

Security screws are available free of charge at the Partnership Roadshows through the year or via your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

As always, please urge your neighbours, colleagues and friends to join up to the CommunitySafe site.

To report Crime please remember to call 999 if there is a crime happening ‘now’ or the new non-emergency number 0300 123 1212 if it has already happened.

Best Wishes,

Sgt. Lee Rogerson

Theft Of Petrol from MV's

February 02, 2010 14:16

Thurlow Park SNT is suffering from an increase in theft of petrol from motor vehicles, focused around Idminston Road, Carson Road and Park Hall Road, SE27.
Over the last two months we have had approximately 30 offences, generally committed overnight and targeting older vehicles, both on the road and in driveways. Residents are encouraged to report offences to Police and report suspicious behaviour if seen.

Ward Priority Update to end of January

February 02, 2010 13:20

January Crime Update

Priority 1: House Burglary

There has been only 1 house burglary reported across the ward in January. This occurred in Westway on 27/1/10. The occupants believe the back door was accidentally left unlocked and someone went in and conducted an untidy search of the upstairs rooms. This occurred between 9am and 5pm.

Priority 2: Theft from motor vehicles.

There have been 2 reports in January. The first overnight on the 5/1/10 when the number plates from a car parked in Marina Avenue were taken. The second occurred on the 29/1/10 when a laptop was stolen from the rear seat of a car parked in the B&Q car park. The offender drilled out the door lock.

Please be re-assured by how low this as there are approximately 9500 people living on the ward.

Police Operation on the Ward

On 27/1/10 an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Operation was conducted on Burlington Road near to Tesco by the West Barnes and Dundonald Safer Neighbourhood Teams. This is one of the best tools for catching people involved in crime as we will either come across a vehicle which has directly been involved in crime and the occupants are arrested or the driver has no driving documents as people involved in acquisitive crime often are not willing to pay for insurance or tax for their car.
Numerous cars were stopped with one being seized and 4 drivers dealt with for document offences.

Our next drop in surgeries will be

Wed 3rd Feb 10-11am at Bon Bonnies, West Barnes Lane
Wed 10th Feb 7-8.30pm at B&Q Foyer
Thur 11th Mar 3.30-5pm Motspur Park Library, Station Road

Colliers Wood Update

February 02, 2010 11:59

Dear residents,

Colliers Wood crime figures for the last two weeks are three burglaries (including one non dwelling which is the same as the previous two weeks), three thefts from motor vehicles (one theft of a Harley Davidson motorcycle), and two Robberies. The Antisocial Behaviour Issues in SW17 have greatly reduced, although we are still monitoring this on a daily basis.

The 'DRIVE OUT VEHICLE CRIME' campaign is into it's second month. Having offered a property marking service where your team will security mark your property (sat navs, radio facia, etc) using UV pens, we are now handing out free security screws to motorists for securing number plates. Security screws are available free of charge at the Partnership Roadshows through the year or via your Colliers Wood Safer Neighbourhood Team.

No warrants in this last two weeks, although one of those on Police bail from a previous warrant was charged to appear at Court for Drug related offences.

As always, your Safer Neighbourhoods Team patrol on foot, pedal cycle and motorcycle. Please feel free to stop and speak to them concerning any issues.

Lower M orden Priorities Update

January 31, 2010 12:24

Lower Morden Newsletter for 31st January 2010

On Thursday 21st January 2010 the Lower Morden Ward Panel met and after lengthy discussion it was agreed that the team will continue to work on the priorities they have already been set.

Updates on Ward Priority

1) Burglary
The team continue to canvas for support for alleygate schemes. Two of these schemes in Dudley Drive are close to completion. For the team burglary is the priority that we work the most on. Patrols of areas that have historically or currently being targeted are increased.
New Home Security scheme has started where the team will patrol a road and homeowners informed of any security issues that may make their property vulnerable.
In the period of June 2008 - Dec 2008, Lower Morden had 27 residential burglaries. In the same period in 2009 this has fallen to 9.

2) ASB by Youths
Patrols have continued in the areas of Four Acres Estate and the alleys of Tudor Drive. A couple of youths have been stopped in these areas. At the time of interaction with police they have not be causing any anti social problems. Patrols will continue in this area.

3) ASB by Motorists
The team assisted by officers from other Safer Neighbourhoods team carried out an Automated Number Plate Recognition Operation in Hillcross Avenue. During this operation 27 vehicles where stopped for various reasons. Five drivers where reported for offences including driving whilst on a mobile phone and no insurance. Another driver had their vehicle seized from them due to not having the appropriate driving licence. These operations will continue throughout the year.

4) Motor Vehicle Crime
For this priority we are attempting to work on education towards vehicle owners. If valuables are not left in a vehicle then it will not be stolen.
Members of the team are currently (until 2pm) at the Co- Op in Grand Drive handed out crime advice leaflets re car security. They are also handing out number plate’s screws and handy reminder air fresheners.
The Drive Out Vehicle crime campaign continues and the February instalment should have been delivered to your email early this week.

The team continues to provide an effective police response to issue concerning the residents/ visitors to Lower Morden Ward. If you have any concerns re crime or Anti Social Behaviour please contact the team on 0208 721 2456 or email LowerMorden.SNT@met.police.uk
