I aim to supply informative and timely information from all your Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Some of you may have noticed that we now have a separate mailing groups for each individual Ward. That means 1 mailing group for each of our 21 Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Information will be sent out on these new Ward based groups and the 2 previous SNT generic groups, Lambeth North Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Lambeth South Safer Neighbourhood Teams, will be discontinued. Can you all please kindly log into CommunitySafe and join the Ward groups that you wish to receive news on? I don't want to lose anyone as a member and therefore you all need to select which SNT groups you wish to be members of. Plus there are the Lambeth North - Urgent and Lambeth South - Urgent groups which you can join as well. These are not SNT related, but will have details of urgent and critical incidents, such as road closures or missing persons. http://www.communitysafe.gov.uk/home If you are not sure which Ward you live on or which Wards are bordering yours then please see the MPS web site at http://www.met.police.uk/teams/lambeth/index.php where all 21 Ward teams are shown with accompanying maps. On Wednesday 18 August the Brixton Summer Project held at Loughborough Primary School Minet Road, Brixton welcomed the former EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella who is now a prominent anti-knife crime campaigner to see the project in action. During her visit Ms Kinsella also observed a presentation regarding the ‘Growing Against Gangs’ programme. This educational initiative explores the issues around ‘youth gang culture’. Now in its twenty-third year, the Lambeth Summer Projects has seen success with the numbers of children attending from across the borough increasing every year. This year the project has seen over 750 young people aged from nine to sixteen years take part in the four week programme held at four school sites within Lambeth that have been kept open and managed by Lambeth borough Police Safer Schools Officers in partnership with Police Community Support Officers, Lambeth’s Local Authority youth workers and community volunteers.
Today she visits the Brixton Project as the start of a series of visits to youth projects across the country in support for her anti-knife crime message and her role in advising the government of what young people think and how best to communicate an effective message to the minority of people who engage in carrying knives and youth violence to change their behaviour and deter them from carrying offensive weapons that would lead to reducing the number young lives lost to youth violence. Chief Inspector Patrick Beynon of Lambeth Safer Neighbourhoods said: “Our work with the local authority and other partners have ensured the success of this project for positive activities for young people”. Without this project some of the young people involved could become victims or perpetrators of crime and anti-social behaviour. “ For more information about the Lambeth Summer Projects please visit www.LambethSummerProjects.co.uk. |

On-the-spot fines for offences including being drunk and disorderly have been stopped in parts of London. Under a pilot scheme running in Westminster, Lambeth and Southwark, officers will use court action or "words of advice" instead of fines. The change will also affect offences of retail theft, disorder and threatening and abusive behaviour. Less than half of on-the-spot fines for shoplifting were paid last year, the Ministry of Justice said in July. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We are concerned in London that too many fixed penalty notices are issued, and a significant number of these don't get paid. "This is wasting police time and not acting as a punishment or deterrent." 'More effective' He added: "This doesn't mean we aren't dealing with these offences. "We are seeing if there is a more effective way to deal with them, such as through cautions, through the courts or, in minor cases, words of advice." The pilot scheme is due to be expanded to Lewisham and Greenwich. Last month junior justice minister Crispin Blunt revealed that less than half of the fines issued for shoplifting last year were paid in full. Some 45,616 fixed penalty notices were issued in England and Wales but just 20,903 were settled. |

PCSO’s from the Oval Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) continue to clamp down on cycling on footpaths. On Monday 9 August, at approximately 11:30am on South Lambeth Road PCSO’s stopped a man cycling along the footpath. An accompanying PC made the arrest of the young man on suspicion of going to commit a burglary. A pair of bolt cutters was found in the young man’s bag to which he could not give a reasonable explanation for having. He was consequently arrested and taken to a South London Police Station where upon further examination it was suspected that the bike he was riding had been stolen. The bike had been property marked, so that in the event of a loss the bike could be returned to the owner. The youth, 16, from South Lambeth has been bailed pending further enquiries regarding the ownership of the bike. Sergeant Sacre from the Oval SNT said: “This is a good example of local officers knowing local people, and the merits of property marking. Hopefully we can now reunite the bike to its rightful owner”. If you wish to know more about property marking please visit www.immobilise.com or for more information about the your SNT visit www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods |

On Tuesday 3 August as a result of vigilant members of the public and open searches conducted by Lambeth Borough Police Officers, three firearms have been found in Brixton and removed from the streets of our borough. These included one handgun with the relevant ammunition, a shot gun and a very realistic BB gun. All weapons are believed to be involved in or for the use criminal activity or the intimidation of others, although it is not believed they are linked to each other. Each weapon was found in separate locations within hours of each other. An investigation by Lambeth’s Pro-active Firearms Team is underway to identify those responsible for these weapons and any offences which may have involved these firearms. The ongoing work of this unit and others on Lambeth, together with useful intelligence from the public has played a significant part in reducing gun crime on this Borough. The recovery and removal of these three weapons from criminal hands greatly assists work to further reduce the incidence of gun crime in Lambeth. Local police will continue to use a wide range of tactics against this crime, to ensure the safety of the local community. This follows the seizure of three other firearms found in the past seventeen days.

On Saturday 24 July the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church conducted an anti-gun and knife crime public rally and march through the streets of Brixton policed and supported by Lambeth Borough Police Officers. Led by the combined musical band of the Brixton and Hackney Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) churches, the public rally and march began at 12:30pm at the SDA church in Lambeth Ducie Street Clapham SW4 and was joined by the Hackney SDA church, where they walked through the roads of Ferndale ward before ending at Windrush Square Brixton. Ferndale Safer Neighbourhoods Team had previously worked in partnership with the organisers to plan for public safety and to prevent public disorder however was on the day to show their support for the important community issues being raised; namely violence, homelessness and gangs, while facilitating a lawful protest. Approximately 200 people attended and marched to the music played by the band while holding posters. At Windrush Square the issues raised were clarified by a speech delivered by Police Constable Errol Paterson Lambeth’s African Caribbean Community Liaison Officer followed by a series of songs and speeches by the SDA. PC Errol Patterson commented of the day’s event; “The march was well attended and passed off successfully. With the theme being both of fellowship of the church and also a message of anti knife, drug & gun crime amongst the youths in the community, it was a day with a positive message delivered to a wide audience. I intend to work more closely with the church in the very near future and the pastor has expressed his desire to work more closely with the police." PS Paul White of Ferndale SNT commented: "This March has helped bring the community in a very worthwhile cause, and will help divert some youths from gangs and the other it will show that the whole community is against this violence." |
