Free Burglar Alarm Scam

Dear residents

We have recieved a letter from a concerned resident and we feel that it is a matter that you should be aware of:

Hello

i just had a call from something like the "crime research association" offering a free burglar alarm to selected properties in Valetta Rd. When pressed i was told that although the alarm was free there would be an unspecified monitoring charge. I then looked this up on the internet and discovered this has already been reported as a scam in different parts of the country:

http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/rbnews/5041925.REDBRIDGE__Council_warns_of_burglar_alarm_scam/
http://blogs.mirror.co.uk/investigations/2010/03/beware-free-burglar-alarm-offe.html

The caller was particularly interested in finding out if i was over 80 and the above reports stress the elderly are targeted. Given there are a number of elderly residents in Valetta Rd would it be worth alerting people to the dangers of responding to this kind of call?

Please be aware of the implications should you be offered this service.

Southfield SNT Update

Dear Residents

We have recently had an incident on Southfield Ward where a resident has been the unfortunate victim of "hard luck" story. A young white girl, smartly dressed in her early twenties and appeared to be 4 to 5 months pregnant, knocked on the residents door and stated that she had not got any money to get to work as she had misplaced her hand bag with her Oyster card inside. Many people who use this story often ask to use the residents phone from which they dial a number which the resident is charged often at a very considerable rate. Please dont let them "borrow" your phone. The resident took pity on this female and "lent" her £10. Not suprisingly the female has not been seen since.

Could we please remind you all that in alot of these cases the "victims" story often seems a plausible one. We urge you therefore that if this happens to you not to let any one into your property and if the person genuinely appears distressed and in need of assistance that you call 999 for one of the emergency services. If the person is genuine they will remain there and wait for help.

Theft from motor vehicles continues to be a problem especially now in the warm weather. There has been a recent incident on the ward where a driver has left the front passenger window open whilst driving. When she came to a stop a thief on a pedal cycle reached in and grabbed her bag which was on the seat next to her and made off. Please be aware of this.

There have been a number of cases recently where members of public have been approached in the street and have been offered what they believe to be a laptop or camera. After handing the money over the item was found to be bottles of water or onions of the same weight.

A few months ago we arrested 2 males in Eastcote Lane at the junction of Moat Farm Road, near the no-entry. They had a laptop, a receipt, loads of empty laptop bags and loads of sacks of onions.

Should you be approached by people offering you goods in those circumstances always call 999.

SOUTHALL police are set to receive two commendations from top brass at New Scotland Yard at a ceremony in April.

Keeping you safe - some useful advice

February 11, 2010 16:36

Walpole SNT would like to offer some Crime Prevention advice to members of the public. We have received reports of vulnerable victims having their purses stolen, whilst they have been travelling on buses (pick pocketing).

In order to keep yourself and your belongings safe, when shopping/ walking around, we would like to advise you to:

1. Keep your handbag under your arm, and close to your body. If this has a long strap, wear across the front of your body.
2. Wherever possible, always keep purses/wallets in a securely fastened pocket. NEVER advertise valuables.
3. Be aware of who is around you and of people standing too close to you.
4. If you use a pram or wheelchair, do not leave your bag unattended or hung over the back of wheelchairs. It is also not advisable to keep your bag in the tray, underneath the pushchair.
5. When using a cash point, be aware of who may be observing you or standing too close to you. If someone tries to engage you in a conversation, whilst you are using the cash point, cancel the transaction and remove your card. Inform Police and bank staff of the suspicious behaviour.

Thieves frequently operate:
At tube stations
Cash points
In car parks
Getting on or off buses
In overcrowded places.

To report any suspicious behaviour, call us on 02071619174. Our non emergency crime number is 03001231212. In an emergency, or if a crime is taking place call 999.
