Streatham Safer Neighbourhood Teams worked with British Transport Police and Railway Revenue Inspectors at all three of Streatham's train stations on Thursday 27th May 2010 to quell Anti-Social Behaviour and incidents of Robbery in the neighbouring vicinities. 2 people were reported to court for fare evasion while a further 3 received cautions and 11 received fixed penalty fines. 18 people hanging around the Stations were Stop and Accounted (i.e. had to satisfy police as to their presence) and another 7 people were searched by officers - 2 of which received warnings for possessing cannabis. One individual received a fixed penalty notice for cycling on the pavement when he refused to accept an officer's advice to walk with his bike. The Public appeared very supportive of the initiative. PS Aiveen McMANUS stated, "The public appeared very supportive of police presence and were pleased that fare evaders were caught. They also mentioned they felt reassured that our presence appeared to cause groups of people with no purpose to be in the area to move on." PS Steve JONES commented, "Further joint operations are planned. We have had a number of robberies occurring around our train stations where victims have been targeted for visible valuables. With the modern trend of carrying IPODs and expensive mobile phones, the public need to be reminded that these items should only be used in a safe environment and not used when walking out of a train station! This is how criminals spot their potential victims. It is imperative to be aware of your surroundings." |
