On Saturday 24 July the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church conducted an anti-gun and knife crime public rally and march through the streets of Brixton policed and supported by Lambeth Borough Police Officers. Led by the combined musical band of the Brixton and Hackney Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) churches, the public rally and march began at 12:30pm at the SDA church in Lambeth Ducie Street Clapham SW4 and was joined by the Hackney SDA church, where they walked through the roads of Ferndale ward before ending at Windrush Square Brixton. Ferndale Safer Neighbourhoods Team had previously worked in partnership with the organisers to plan for public safety and to prevent public disorder however was on the day to show their support for the important community issues being raised; namely violence, homelessness and gangs, while facilitating a lawful protest. Approximately 200 people attended and marched to the music played by the band while holding posters. At Windrush Square the issues raised were clarified by a speech delivered by Police Constable Errol Paterson Lambeth’s African Caribbean Community Liaison Officer followed by a series of songs and speeches by the SDA. PC Errol Patterson commented of the day’s event; “The march was well attended and passed off successfully. With the theme being both of fellowship of the church and also a message of anti knife, drug & gun crime amongst the youths in the community, it was a day with a positive message delivered to a wide audience. I intend to work more closely with the church in the very near future and the pastor has expressed his desire to work more closely with the police." PS Paul White of Ferndale SNT commented: "This March has helped bring the community in a very worthwhile cause, and will help divert some youths from gangs and the other it will show that the whole community is against this violence." |

Lambeth safer schools officers manage the summer project on site From Monday 26 July and for the twenty-third successive year Lambeth Borough Met Police will be supporting the Lambeth Summer Project. An initiative for school children during their four week summer holiday to become involved in activities they may not have experienced while interacting positively with the police. This is one of the longest running and largest youth engagement/crime prevention and positive activities programme of its kind in London.
Chief Inspector Patrick Beynon of Lambeth Safer Neighbourhoods said: “Lambeth Summer Project will celebrate its 23rd anniversary this year. It reflects the strong police, and the third sector. Our successful partnerships with the local authority and other partners have ensured the success of this project for such positive activities for young people. Without this project some of the young people involved could become victims or perpetrators of crime and anti-social behaviour. “ For more information on the Summer Project please contact your local Safer Schools Officer by visiting their web page at: www.met.police.uk/teams/lambeth/03working_with_the_community/lambeth_safer_schools_partnership |

A slightly historic story from April but worth highlighting the good work involved. PREVENT Engagement Officers hold community based exercise. The aim of Prevent is to stop people, regardless of their faith or background, from becoming terrorists or supporting violent extremists. This exercise provided a good opportunity to interact with the community
The South London Prevent Engagement Officers got together to deliver the ‘ACT (All Communities Together) NOW’ exercise to over 200 pupils at the Bishop Thomas Grant school in Streatham, while their West London colleagues delivered the session to a similar number of students at the Phoenix school in Shepherds Bush. Each exercise saw the students taking on the role as police officers having to deal with a terrorist incident. The pupils were faced with snippets of information and intelligence about an emerging terrorist conspiracy, and had to decide on what actions to take: who should they arrest? Should they use under cover officers? Should they search the house? What should they tell the public? As well as giving the young people the chance to play cops the ACT NOW also gave the students and officers a chance to talk about violent extremism and terrorism: why it may happen, who’s to blame; as well as giving all sides more of an insight into what the police have to do, and how young people feel about these important issues. After having delivered a number of ‘ACT NOW’s across the area, the South London Prevent Engagement officers (PEOs) decided to work together to deliver the exercise to a larger group to spread the message as far and wide as possible. This approach was also taken by West London PEOs, who pooled their resources to increase coverage and efficiency by reaching an entire year group. The exercises, which took part during school hours, were delivered by the PEOs direct to groups of 13 and 14 year olds, who, after some initial reservations became fully engaged with the officers. First they had to decide on how to handle small pieces of intelligence, which were being fed in, while later on, as the conspiracy becomes more apparent they had to co-ordinate operations to identify, trace and arrest suspects; search properties; and finally, face the media to explain their actions. The South London event was organised by Lambeth PEO Rick Warrington, who worked with his counterparts from Wandsworth, Croydon, Merton, Twickenham & Richmond as well as one of Lambeth’s safer schools officers Paul Dowsett and Prevent south cluster sergeant Gavin Ellis. The sessions at Shepherds Bush were delivered by six PEOs covering the West London Prevent boroughs. PC Warrington was delighted with the input from the role players. He said: “The kids really got immersed into their role as police officers in having to make critical decisions in dealing with a fast moving, terrorist investigation; while having to face the same dilemmas that our colleagues face in similar, but real life situations. PC Lee Carroll, PEO for Hammersmith & Fulham was also impressed with the involvement of the students, and added: “The exercises really opened up the debate about violent extremism. It gave us all - police and young people - the chance to discuss these important issues, to address stereotypes, and to talk about policing and the law in a frank and informal way.” The Met's Mark Goldby, Supt for Prevent praised the officers for pulling together to deliver the exercises to so many in one go. He said: “This is a great example of PEOs working together with their borough colleagues and partners to deliver important messages to young people in an engaging and effective way.” “We hope that the exercise gave them a brief insight into the work of the police as well as giving them the opportunity to discuss the issues around terrorism and violent extremism. “Our ACT NOW exercises are part of our strategy of being open about how we are working with the public to protect communities from the threat of terrorism and violent extremism.” One of the pupils at Bishop Thomas Grant school summed up the exercise by saying: “The session was fun, slightly scary, but really educational”. Lambeth Cadets achieve success in competition Lambeth Volunteer Police Cadets achieved success in the annual Metropolitan Police Cadet competition that took place over the weekend (10th and 11th July) at Hendon training school by coming first in one of the categories and second in another. The competition saw entries from the cadet programme in almost the entire thirty-two London boroughs and tested the cadet’s skills in police powers, drill, procedures, team-work, first aid and the 500 meter shield run. Lambeth Volunteer Police Cadets have achieved their best results since 2001 by coming first in the immensely contended drill and second (beaten by one point!) in the police powers and procedures, placing them third overall. PC Paul Dowsett, Lambeth’s cadet co-ordinator stated: "I am once again very proud of the young people of this borough. They continually show dedication and community focus with everything they do. They have volunteered so many hours for the borough of Lambeth, including fetes, leaflet drops, test purchasing and central aids. This hard work has paid off today with the great result we have achieved against all the other boroughs in London. I would like to thank the staff and cadets for all their ‘extra’ free time they have put in over the last few months". Lambeth Volunteer Police Cadets currently has 62 young people, meeting once a week at a local school. During the last two years cadets have progressed into becoming Special Constables, PCSO's, staff of SO15 the Met’s Counter Terrorism command, Volunteer Police Staff and other outside agencies including Immigration. Lambeth South Volunteer Police Cadet Staff and teachers from Bishop Thomas Grant School helped raise over £2000 for the Lambeth Cadets. The staff and teachers raised the cash by climbing and walking two of Britain's highest mountains. PC Paul Dowsett, Cadet leader said " The staff and teachers gave up their weekend to climb two very challenging mountains including Snowdon. Pupils, parents and friends of the Cadets gave over their hard earned cash in support of the staff" The money raised will go towards increasing the amount of cadets that attend the weekly meetings. It will also allow for extra diversionary weekends away and community engagement. On another positive note, a brand new minibus has been bought for the Boroughs Cadets. PC Dowsett said "This has taken nearly 3 years to get outside funding for. I would like to thank Inspector Russell Taylor from the partnership team for his help in achieving this". The minibus will allow the Cadets to involve themselves more with local SNT leaflet drops, community events, fetes, crime prevention talks and weekends away. The money raised was from various sources throughout Lambeth via the PTAC fund. Lambeth Police Cadets currently have 62 (increased from 52 which was in previous circulation) young people who meet each and every week in 2 local Secondary Schools. Kind regards, Inspector Nicholas Fallowfield

Chief Superintendent Nick Ephgrave of Lambeth Borough Police said; “It is with deep sadness that my officers and I dealt with the fatal stabbing of a young man outside Park Campus School last week. It would be quite wrong of me to go into the details of the investigation other than to reassure everyone that the Homicide Command is conducting a thorough and professional investigation. What I do want to make clear is that the relationship between local police and Park Campus School has been and remains a positive and proactive partnership with the aim of minimizing harm to pupils, teachers and local residents alike. Park Campus has an excellent record of taking sensible and proportionate preventative action together with police involving many tactics including the use of knife arches. The police have and will continue to provide a visible presence in and around the school. To provide reassurance to local community and pupils of all schools we are increasing the number of high visible patrols across the borough.” |

Streatham Safer Neighbourhood Teams worked with British Transport Police and Railway Revenue Inspectors at all three of Streatham's train stations on Thursday 27th May 2010 to quell Anti-Social Behaviour and incidents of Robbery in the neighbouring vicinities. 2 people were reported to court for fare evasion while a further 3 received cautions and 11 received fixed penalty fines. 18 people hanging around the Stations were Stop and Accounted (i.e. had to satisfy police as to their presence) and another 7 people were searched by officers - 2 of which received warnings for possessing cannabis. One individual received a fixed penalty notice for cycling on the pavement when he refused to accept an officer's advice to walk with his bike. The Public appeared very supportive of the initiative. PS Aiveen McMANUS stated, "The public appeared very supportive of police presence and were pleased that fare evaders were caught. They also mentioned they felt reassured that our presence appeared to cause groups of people with no purpose to be in the area to move on." PS Steve JONES commented, "Further joint operations are planned. We have had a number of robberies occurring around our train stations where victims have been targeted for visible valuables. With the modern trend of carrying IPODs and expensive mobile phones, the public need to be reminded that these items should only be used in a safe environment and not used when walking out of a train station! This is how criminals spot their potential victims. It is imperative to be aware of your surroundings." |
